Margi Hopkins graduated from Denison University, Granville Ohio with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, specializing in Life Drawing and Printmaking. She has used Prismacolor Pencils since childhood, but discovered color pencil "painting" while attending a weekend work shop organized by author-artist Vera Curnow in her Rising Sun, Indiana studio and taught by award winning artist Sharon Tiejtjen-Pratt. The technique of layering one color on top of the next and burnishing them together on the surface, though picky and time-consuming results in a kind of magic that has Margi hooked.
Margi started Pepper Portraits in 2001. Over ten years in the veterinary field and a lifetime of pet ownership lends Margi an intuitive approach to her subject. In 2009, she left her full time position to focus on art. This recent change has allowed her to take risks, work larger, explore interesting perspectives and expand her technique. The color washes and loose broad line strokes, create a unique and painterly effect often mistaken for other mediums.
Margi’s work has been exhibited both locally and nationally, in shows such as The International Exhibition of Animals In Art, hosted by LSU School of Veterinary Medicine and the 2012 CPSA International Exhibition. Her painting “Who Rescued Whom?” was awarded Best of Show and People’s Choice in her CPSA District Chapter 119 Exhibition this December 2012. She has authored artist demonstrations for Ann Kullberg’s Colored Pencil Magazine, taught artist workshops, as well as provided artwork for the following books and publications: Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, June 2010; CP Treasures, Colored Pencil Masterworks from Around the Globe, edited by Ann Kullberg; Frame It by Tonia Davenport.
Margi is a member of the Colored Pencil Society of America. When she isn’t hiking with her dogs, taking photographs or painting, she is a veterinary assistant for a local animal hospital. She resides in Batavia Ohio with her husband Adam, her dogs: Ginger and Rags and her cats: Charlotte, Mowgli and Stewie.
